Publisher Synopsis

“Be grateful for your journey because it is yours alone.”

For superstar, Demi Lovato, life has been a journey — a time of dazzling achievements and heartbreaking losses. She is a multi-platinum-selling recording artist, television star, and actress. She has faced struggles ranging from addiction to depression, all the while on a search for self-discovery and happiness. Demi has chronicled her journey in the media, in her song lyrics, and to her 17 million followers on Twitter. Those Tweets evolved into Staying Strong, a powerful 365-day collection of Demi’s most honest, brave, and hopeful insights. Here are her own words, with quotes that inspire her, as well as personal reflections and goals. This is a book for everyone, everywhere, on their own journey who need comfort, inspiration, and a reason every day to stay strong.

My Review

Stay strong. As a reminder to be courageous, Demi Lovato had these words tattooed on her wrist in the place she used to inflict self harm. She replaced scars born out of pain and fear with a message of positive reinforcement that would help her persevere. You can’t change the past. You can’t erase pain. But you can control your present and you can control the way you treat yourself.

What a joy it has been to watch Demi’s reroute her life path. At one time it looked like she would have the now all too familiar sad ending: A young, talented, beautiful girl gains fame and fortune only to be chewed up and spit out by the entertainment industry. Eating disorders, drugs, self-harm…all of these became a part of Demi’s daily life — a reality that was in stark contrast to the bubbly fictional lives she portrayed on screen. Even her own life, her own image, had become a lie. She lived behind a mask, keeping her pain and self-loathing a secret, hiding the scars on her wrist where she cut.

Thankfully, Demi sought help for her emotional issues, and after treatment emerged a stronger person. And seemingly, she hasn’t looked back. Her career has only become busier and more successful. It’s important to note that nearly every step of her walk since leaving rehab, Demi has shared the stories she used to keep hidden, spoken of the darkness she used to keep secret, and laid bare her heart to young people all over the world.

Staying Strong has been criticized as cliched, but those who criticize do so from a misinformed perspective. They are likely passing judgment and making assumptions about Demi, painting her as a self-important celebrity diva of sorts. And they couldn’t be more wrong.

Demi isn’t pretending to know it all, and she’d be the first to tell you that she is still learning. But her youth and her renown put Demi in a unique position to be able to speak to girls and young women about issues many of them face. Issues she herself has faced, lived with, and endured. And she has chosen to give them this book: a collection of quotations and words of wisdom for each day, followed by Demi’s own words and a goal-directed target.

Demi encourages self-love and affirmation, compassion, forgiveness, honesty, philanthropy and volunteer work. Though her words may not be new, especially to adults, bear in mind that her audience may be hearing some of these ideas for the first time. And, also for the first time, they may be hearing valuable, practical, life-affirming words. Or maybe they’ve heard it all before but never listened. I’d like to believe that Demi’s voice will cut through and reach hurting souls. She may be like a big sister to these girls.

Before you turn on your cynicism and dismiss Demi Lovato’s book of daily inspirations, close your mouth and open your heart. Demi is a success story. She was a broken, hurting girl who found a way out of pain and darkness. She survived. And in her gratitude and wisdom, she’s chosen to help others find the strength to do the same — to stay strong.
