DVD Review: Rocky Road Starring Mark Salling
4 of 5 hearts. Sweet, Summer Feel-Good Fun. Whether or not you’re a fan of Fox’s Glee, you’ll enjoy this charming, heartfelt UP TV original film and the lessons it imparts through humor and ice cream. With Rocky Road, husband and wife team Neal and Tippi Dobrofsky (whose recent writing credits include Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart) have scripted a sincere, humble, never preachy treat that will melt even the hardest of hearts!
Upcoming Air Times On UP TV: Sunday, Aug 10: 6PM ET; Tuesday, Aug 12: 9PM ET
Kids Corner: The Genius Files: Mission Unstoppable by Dan Gutman
3 of 5 hearts. An Unorthodox Family Vacation With a Dangerous Twist. Although all the pieces are here: laughs, ciphered messages, evil villains, strange trivia, and whip-smart kids who outwit their parents, I found the tale unbalanced and lacking in interest. Recommended, with reservation: If you are inclined to read this or offer it to your child, pick it up from the library.
Kids Corner: Destiny, Rewritten by Kathryn Fitzmaurice
4.5 of 5 Hearts. A Thought-Provoking and Thoroughly Pleasing Read. Destiny, Rewritten proves that a children’s novel doesn’t have to be edgy in prose, character, or plot to be interesting, enjoyable, and satisfying. And it made me finally get around to buying a copy of Emily Dickinson’s complete poems. For that, I am very grateful! — Jennifer Michelle
Teen Zone: The Bridge From Me To You by Lisa Schroeder
3.5 of 5 hearts. A Thoughtful Romance With a Positive Message. The Bridge From Me To You tells its story in a sincere effort to inspire and uplift. While its message is successfully communicated, its emotional impact is diminished by flaws in the writing. Though she didn’t execute her vision as powerfully as I would have liked, Schroeder is to be applauded for her efforts to elevate her romantically-minded tale by putting a little meat on its bones.
Teen Zone: Magnolia by Kristi Cook
4 of 5 hearts. A Sweet and Stormy Southern Romance. Magnolia tells the story of Ryder and Jemma, who aren’t Romeo and Juliet. They’re just two Mississippi kids who want nothing more than to shape their own destiny. Whether they do that together, I’ll not say and spoil all the fun! Take a seat in the shade, sip a little sweet tea, and settle in for the ride!
And that’s everything that happened on ReadLove this week. See you next week!
Until then, I’d love it if you shared a bit about your week in the comments!
